- Solar Sisters: Redefining Sustainability Through Community and Design
by Walter Clayton What if a simple refill could help save the planet? At Solar Sisters, this question fuels every aspect of their work. A zero-waste shop and café, Solar Sisters is transforming how people think about sustainability, combining humanity-centered design with community spirit to create meaningful change. Impact That Matters: Tangible Results for the Environment Solar Sisters’ refill model has made a remarkable environmental impact, saving up to 200 plastic bottles for every barrel of laundry liquid refilled. With its hybrid approach—a café nestled within a zero-waste shop—the organization makes sustainable living approachable and practical. By the Numbers: Best-seller: Laundry liquid. Community Feedback: Google reviews highlight consistent praise for their warm, inviting space. Engagement: Social media posts and newsletters spark lively conversations and community involvement. This data not only showcases their success but also inspires others to adopt similar models in their businesses. Tackling Challenges with Innovation Resistance is inevitable when introducing new practices. Solar Sisters faced challenges from customers seeking takeaway coffee cups, which they don’t offer to minimize waste. Their response? Instead of compromising, they created a space so welcoming that curiosity triumphed over convenience. The café-shop hybrid allowed hesitant visitors to see others refill their products, normalizing the practice and fostering broader acceptance. Humanity-Centered Design in Action Solar Sisters embodies the principles of humanity-centered design: Focus on the Entire Ecosystem: Their choices benefit not only humans but also animals, plants, and the environment. For instance, all materials used are 100% recycled. Address Root Causes: Rather than just managing waste, they aim to prevent it through educational infographics and direct communication. Think Long-Term: By hosting child-friendly events, they’re influencing the next generation to embrace sustainability. Test and Refine: Initially a refill shop, they added tables and chairs after seeing the popularity of the café. Even events like “Pizza and Poetry” emerged organically from listening to their community. Design With the Community: Volunteers play an integral role, organizing events and sharing ideas that shape Solar Sisters’ offerings. A Model for Future Change Solar Sisters’ journey started with one ambitious idea but grew into a mosaic of interconnected initiatives. Regular stock reviews and team collaborations ensure adaptability, while community-driven ideas keep the experience fresh and inclusive. Quotes from the Community A Customer’s Perspective: “Solar Sisters makes sustainability accessible without feeling overwhelming.” A Volunteer’s Insight: “It’s inspiring to see how small actions, like refilling a bottle, ripple into a larger impact.” Takeaway for Change-Makers Solar Sisters shows that sustainability isn’t just about reducing waste—it’s about designing ecosystems where everyone feels they belong. For organizations looking to embrace humanity-centered design, their model is a powerful blueprint for fostering lasting change. Ready to explore Solar Sisters? Visit their café and shop to experience sustainability in action. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee, attending a poetry night, or simply refilling your detergent bottle, you’ll be part of a growing movement towards a better world. We're open Monday to Friday from 9.30 til 5.30 and on Sundays from 11AM to 5PM. About us Solar Sisters is a Community Interest Company bringing zero waste shopping to the heart of Guildford. Set up in 2021 by real-life sisters Lucy and Nina, Solar Sisters is so much more than just a zero waste shop. The community-focused plastic-free space hosts events such as yoga, art classes and book clubs. The café provides plant-based breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea options (we have some milk for coffee and cheese for toasties - we're 95% vegan!). Our refills are of exceptional quality and range. Bring your own container or grab a free jar or paper bag to stock up on food such as beans, nuts, pulses, grains, seeds, oats, pasta, rice, couscous, quinoa, snacks, sweets, chocolate, and dried fruit. You can also refill cleaning products such as cleaning vinegar, bicarb, laundry and washing up liquids, shampoo & conditioner, hand soap, shower gel, and much more! Our team Lucy Lucy is a Solar Sister: a mum, a dancer, a psychologist, a pianist, a shop owner, a coffee enthusiast and multi-tasking extraordinaire. Lucy has lived in Surrey for 15 years and is a vital member of the community, providing a premium café experience in Solar Sisters as well as at The Nest Coffee Shop in Bramley. The Nest Nina Nina is the other Solar Sister: a diver, marine conservationist, a boater, an environmental scientist, a masseuse, a painter and a plastic pollution specialist. Ask her anything about reducing plastic waste! She has been attempting to live a low-waste life since 2016 and is always happy to share her knowledge. Nina's other project, Make Art Not Waste, uses art to educate and create change surrounding plastic waste. Make Art Not Waste
