Cloth nappies! Join us to find out more
There are many reasons to use cloth nappies (also known as real or reusable nappies):
- Babies that use cloth nappies are often potty-trained earlier than others, and there’s no greater risk of nappy rash.
- Overall you’re likely to spend less than you would on disposable nappies – and if you have another child, it won’t cost you any more.
- Using them could halve your household waste.
- They are simple to use and can be used with liners that are washable or flushable.
About the workshop facilitator:
A Surrey mum who runs a nappy library is urging other parents to get on board and ditch disposables.
Clare Weightman from Godalming, Surrey loans out reusable cloth nappies to parents and wants to see more of the 17,000 babies born in year in Surrey every year kitted out with cloth versions.
Clare set up the Godalming Nappy Library in the autumn of 2019, she was inspired to take on the challenge after borrowing a nappy kit from the Guildford library for her son.
She started out with just two kits but has since added a further 13 that can accommodate babies and toddlers of all sizes. She also provides demonstrations and support for parents making the switch.
Clare now hopes to make parents aware of the alternatives available and their practical as well as environmental benefits.
Ms Weightman gives the nappies out cheaply which allows poorer parents to use them or others to trial before buying an expensive set.
She explained: "Eight million nappies are thrown out in the UK every year. That is three billion a year.
It takes 1,500 litres of crude oil to produce disposables for one child, while 3% of all household waste is from nappies.
The negative impact they have on our planet is what really convinced me in favour of reusables."
