Second Hand Clothes - What Can We Learn from the Victorians?
Dr Danielle Dove, Surrey Future Fellow and Lecturer in English Literature, University of Surrey
The re-wearing, re-purposing, and recycling of old clothes might seem like contemporary activities, but for the Victorians these processes were central to the ways in which they managed and dealt with cast-off clothing. Danielle will explore the Victorian second-hand clothes market and uncover the various ways in which our own current ecological concerns about the impact of ‘fast fashion’ might find reflection, or potential solutions, in the historic treatment of second-hand garments.
Danielle's talk will be followed by a clothes swap - bring your unwanted clothes and swap them with someone else’s!
